Heather Anderson's Classroom Expectations

As we get back into the swing of a new school year, I would like to remind you about the importance of your child's physical activity education.  It is a well documented fact that Americans become increasingly less active as they age.  Just as children and youth can learn the habit of regular physical activity, they can learn to be inactive if they are not taught skills and given opportunities to be active during their childhood. Be a positive role model.

I encourage you to get active as a family.  Strive to incorporate a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity into your daily lives.  Take a walk.  Ride your bikes.  Play catch.  Jump rope.  Just get moving!

I would appreciate parent assistance in reminding students to wear tennis shoes and clothing they can be physically active in, on pe days.  For safety reasons, students will not be allowed to fully participate in our activities if they do not wear tennis shoes.  If students fail to wear tennis shoes on more than 2 occasions, I will be contacting parents to problem solve.  I've encouraged students to mark pe days on a calendar at home as a reminder to dress appropriately.  If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Classroom Activities

Since the beginning of the school year, we've covered a variety of topics in physical education.  Beyond the initial start of the year discussion of rules & expectations, fire & tornado drill procedures, and bus safety...

Pre-Kindergarten & Kindergarten have been working on body part identification, directionality, and learning the locomotor skill of jumping.  Have your child demonstrate a forward, backward, sideways, in place, 180°, and 360° jump.  We will continue to work on other locomotor skills as the year progresses.  We have recently begun a balloon unit, which helps students develop visual tracking and manipulation skills.

1st - 6th grades have spent several days these last few weeks completing physical fitness testing.  1st & 2nd grades participated in the 20 meter pacer (running), curl up, and flexed arm hang tests.  3rd – 6th were administered the 20 meter pacer (running), curl up, trunk lift, 90° push up, and sit & reach tests.  These tests will be readministered in the spring with the hope that students will show improvement in their aerobic capacity, muscular strength/endurance, and flexibility.  Encourage your children to spend time daily stretching and building their muscle strength.

Grades 1st – 5th have recently begun a jump rope unit, while 6th grade is in the midst of a Frisbee unit that will culminate with a Frisbee Golf Tournament.  Pre-Kindergarten – 6th grade will be discussing & practicing pedestrian safety before the end of October.

Special Events

The week of October 5th, the entire elementary participated in the Fall Fitness Day sponsored by Live Healthy Iowa Kids & Live Healthy Iowa.  Our school has the opportunity to win up to $1000.  All students participated in a 30 minute physical activity.  Many classrooms planned community walks! A great opportunity to practice pedestrian safety!

Later in October, students in grades 1st – 5th will be participating in Jump Rope for Heart.  Money raised for the American Heart Association goes toward inventing new medicines, treatments, and equipment that could help stop heart disease, maybe even for someone you know!  Check out my JRFH page link.
