May 18: Field Trip to Big Hollow (half day) (Students will need to bring their lunches both days. NO peanut products due to allergies in the second grade.
READING: The Unit 30 story is ”Ruth Law Thrills a Nation.” This is a biography about the stunt pilot, Ruth Law. In 1916 she set out to break the one-day distance record by flying from Chicago to New York City. We will be working on the following skills: Author’s Purpose, Using Context to Confirm Meaning, Summarizing, Predicting Outcomes, and Homophones, and reviewing Contractions. Vocabulary words are feat, heroine, hospitality, refused, spectators, stood.
SPELLING: The Unit 30 Test will be THURSDAY, May 17. Most of the words have the prefixes “over” and “un”. List 30 words: overdue, overnight, overboard, overflow, overhead, unfriendly, unsure, uneven, unfair, unfold, daughter, yawn, hungry, group, above. Thanks for helping your child study these at home! (As usual, RAINBOW WORDS should be returned before the test on May 17.)
MATH: We are working with larger numbers now and practicing with place value up to 1,000. (We’ve been doing some challenge math with numbers up to a million as well.) We’ll be using subtraction skills with 3 digit numbers and subtracting money. We are doing a lot of review of skills that we’ve learned through the year. (Time, money, place value, fractions, basic facts.)
SCIENCE: Daily Science “Big Idea”: “Sounds are made by vibrating objects.” This will be our “Review Week” with this concept. We are finishing up with our chapter about dinosaurs as well. We will have our test on Thursday, May 17. (Students will bring home a study guide today.)
OTHER: Thanks to parents that are planning to go tomorrow to the Niabi Zoo (May 15). Our Big Hollow trip on May 18 is a half day trip, but students still need to bring their lunches. The class is really looking forward to these special days!
Wow! Last week really flew by, and this one seems to be stacking up to be even busier! We will continue to work hard until the end of the year, though. I am so proud of how all the students have grown and of the way their skills have developed throughout the year! Thanks again for your help at home. Your support has made such a difference!
Let’s have a great “last full week of school”!
