Mrs. Hunerdosse's Classroom News
Reading: Now that we know our letters and sounds, we are blending those sounds together to read words. For example, /c/ /a/ /t/ would be read "cat." This is a skill we will work on throughout the entire year. The students are doing a great job blending those sounds together! We are really good at hearing the beginning sounds of words, so now we are listening for the ending sounds of words. The sight words we are learning this week are you and your. We have opportunities to read these words in our guided reading books. Thank you for reading them at home! :)
Reading Centers: While Miss Rashid and I are working with small groups, the other students are participating in a reading center to help them improve their reading skills. These are the reading centers students are visiting this week:
- Turkey Story: The students write a sentence about a turkey on a turkey template and will then color the template and cut it out. We are hanging these in our room so they will not come home right away! :)
- Sight Word Papers: The students fill in the blank with a sight word and then practice reading the sentences. The picture clues will help them with words they do not know! The sight words students will be using are "see" and "you."
- Spinner Counting Game: Two students play this game! Students spin the spinner and then count out the appropriate number of counters and place them on their grid. They continue taking turns until one person fills up his grid, and that person is the winner. Students will then practice writing to 30.
- Sight Word Book: Students circle the sight words and then read the book. They can also color the pictures. We keep these books in our desks and practice reading them during our free time. The book we are reading this week is called "I Like."
- Spelling Flip Book: Students look at a picture and then try to sound out that word. They flip the letter cards to the correct letters to spell the word and then write the word on their paper.
- Pocket Chart: Students sequence events from the popular story, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
- Chinese: Students work with Miss Yang to learn some words in Chinese!
Math: We are learning about shapes this week. We are making a shape book to help us remember the names of the shapes. This week we will talk about circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles. We are writing our numbers to 30.
Writing: We write in our journals every week. We are doing our best to put our thoughts into words. The students are sounding out words the best that they can and are writing down the sounds they hear. We are trying very hard to remember a period at the end of our sentence! :) At this point in time, we are writing one sentence in our journal. As the year goes on, we will write more! This week we are writing the letters Y and Z in our handwriting books. We are also learning how to write our last names.
Thank you for all of your help at home! As parents, you are your child's first teacher, and all of your hard work is greatly appreciated by me! :) Please continue reading to your child every day. It is one of the most important things you can do to help your child develop a love of reading! Keep reading those library books each night and sending them back to school every day! :)
