Family & Consumer Sciences and Service Occupations

Career pathway opportunities available to Mediapolis students in the family and consumer sciences include a choice between one of the following pathways: 

A)  Education and Training

Career pathway courses:   1)  FACS Exploration 2) Careers/ Computers 3) Intro to Education 4) FOODS 1

5)  Nutrition 6)  Life Management

B)  Foods and Nutrition

Career pathway courses:  1)  FACS Exploration 2) Careers 3)  Culinary 1 4)  Advanced Culinary 5)  Nutrtion 6) Life Management 

A career pathway is a series of 6 courses that will prepare students for a smooth transition into the world of work or into college with 3-9 articulated college credits completed - depending on the career pathway selected.

 

NOTE:  Many FACS classes can be taken as individual electives based on student interest or as a part of a personalized career plan.  

 

fccla.jpgThe integration of Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) provides students with opportunities for leadership development, personal growth, and school/community involvement, yearly membership is $15 and strongly encouraged. 

 

 

Service Occupations are related to FACS education and training to prepare students for the following careers:

  • hospitality service:  food preparation, production and services; food science and nutrition; tourism and recreation; and facilities management and maintenance
  • early childhood:  early childhood and guidance education
  • creative design:  textile and apparel; housing; and interiors and furnishing.
  • service occupations:  education, retail, elderly and disabled adults 

Dori Harvey came to Mediapolis from Brooklyn, Iowa.  The Harvey household consists of her husband, Dave, two college student children, Matthew and Melissa, and two large, loveable adopted dogs, Ricky and Lucy.  Dori brings experience as a Middle School FACS teacher at Grinnell-Newburg Community School District, as a state registered child care provider, and a 5 year private business venture as owner and baker in an organic whole grain bakery where she baked 200 loaves of bread, 150 pounds of granola, and 30 dozen cookies each week during the summer months in a commercial oven.

  • Buena Vista University Major:  Psychology/ Sociology Distributed
  • Iowa State University:  Family and Consumer Science Education Licensure
  • University of Northern Iowa:  Heath Endorsement
