NUTRITION 

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A basic introduction to nutrition with units of study including the role of government in our food, prevention of common diseases (diabetes, heart diseases, some cancers, and hyper tension), My Pyramid and tracking food consumption for 3 days, weight management and a balanced diet, , labeling and regulation of fraudulent claims, and special dietary needs (gluten free, vegetarian, diabetic).  In class food demonstrations involve freshly milled whole grains, green smoothies, and a group healthy snack lab challenge.  A project called food innovations requires each student to demonstrate knowledge of food marketing principles by creating a product at home that meets assigned nutritional guidelines and student groups will prepare a project titled “student body” in which younger elementary students are taught basic nutrition principles. 

 

Students who desire this course to articulate for 3 college credits must complete an application and return to Mrs. Harvey within first two weeks of class.

·         I am aware that my student will be assigned a food innovations project in which they will need to create a food that meets assigned nutritional guidelines at home and prepare a marketing presentation to the class.  I am supportive of this project and will make sure that my student has adequate supplies and equipment.                                                                           Circle:     YES   /   NO

·         I am aware that my student will be given 1 point extra credit for each time they bring a healthy snack into class and in writing explain what makes it healthy (i.e., grain/carb products have 2-3 g fiber, protein products have less than 220 mg sodium, less than 35 % fat).  I am aware that students are allowed to have bottled water, but must fill before class begins.        Circle:  YES / NO

·         I am aware of the personal and career opportunities provided by the career tech student organization FCCLA (Family, Career, Community Leaders of America) and will pay the $15 for my student to become a member of this national organization.                     Circle:    YES    /  NO   

·         IEP and 504 services will be followed according to written documentation.  Teacher will hold student responsible all work and will be available during times above for student questions.  Modification of assignments will be allowed after teacher/ special education meeting.

I understand the class policies and procedures for expected classroom behavior, attendance, and assignments.  I understand my ability to follow these policies will have an impact my grade.  Lost worksheets must be picked up after school and will merit a 25% deduction on the assignment.
