We have recently had some questions about our mask requirements at school.Currently, the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is still recommending the use of masks in school. By following the IDPH recommendation and requiring the use of masks, schools do not need to do contact tracing or isolate and quarantining of students if there is exposure to COVID at school. We found last fall when we were required to do contact tracing, 1 positive or exposed student can take out close to 20 students who then have to miss all in-person instruction and school activities while in quarantine. Imagine how we would feel if we relaxed the mask requirement and had someone test positive causing 15-20 seniors to miss their graduation ceremony due to quarantine requirements from the IDPH.We have sent a request to the state capital asking the governor and Iowa Department of Public Health to consider revision of the current mask recommendations for schools. I'm not sure they realize, as they have opened up other things around the state, the current IDPH mask recommendation ties the hands of school districts and makes it difficult for schools to make decisions based on our local data. We are following the recommendations of the IDPH in an effort to ensure the health and safety of our students and staff. Therefore, we will continue to require the use of masks in an effort to keep students and staff in school without the worry of isolation and quarantine. In doing so, we are also ensuring our students have the ability to participate in face-to-face learning and activities such as Prom, Graduation, and State Athletics.Moving forward, we will continue to monitor the recommendations of the CDC, Iowa Department of Public Health, and the Iowa Department of Education and will implement appropriate changes to our mitigation strategies if the current recommendations change. ...
